Wiltshire v Cornwall - Feb 04
Wiltshire moved up to second place in the West of England County Championship by defeating Cornwall 9½ - 6½ on February 15th. Cornwall were a player short, so Dave Brown, who was due to play on board 13, unselfishly volunteered not to play. This allowed Nicola Thomas to play her second game and James Pothecary and Gareth Williams to make their debuts for the county. They all won convincingly against opponents graded 109. Graham Banda sacrificed a piece for a powerful looking attack, but found himself a move short of being able to deliver mate. Robbie Dams allowed the white centre pawns to advance and cut his position in half. Richard Carver's attack was too slow with his king coming under pressure first, while Gary Tanner's game had enough swings to fill a playground. Gary gained material early in the game, but later on found himself needing to give up the exchange. An unbalanced end game eventually occurred which was a technical win for Gary, but being very short of time, he settled for a draw. Most of the games in the top half resulted in quiet draws. Nick Wingfield and Jane Richmond's opponents caved rapidly when faced with sparks of aggression. ------------------------------------------------------------
Diagram #7 Jane Richmond, white to move, played a move with three enormous threats. What was her move?
